If you were to ask anyone in New York City if they pay a lot for auto insurance they most likely would tell you they do.  It makes sense since it’s the largest city in the US with common congested traffic and risky cab drivers.  But surprisingly, New York does not even show up on the top 20 states with high auto insurance rates.  According to the article “The States With the Highest & Lowest Auto Insurance Rates” by James Zol on TheAutoInsurance.com, Louisiana takes the top spot as the state with the highest auto insurance rates.

Based on a study completed by Insure.com, Louisiana has the highest auto insurance rates primarily due to their law structure.

Many people have heard the phrase accident forgiveness in regards to their car insurance coverage but most people do not know what it actually means. Accident forgiveness is a newer program that many car insurance programs have started using. It forgives drivers for the first car accident that they are involved in. The driver then benefits from the program because they do not see their car insurance premiums go up after their insurance claim has been processed.

Does accident forgiveness cost money? Most car insurance companies now offer accident forgiveness coverage as an additional type of coverage so there is an additional fee for this benefit.

Your college student came home for the holidays, and wanted to take the car back to campus. Before you send you agree, here are a few things to consider.

Away at school auto insurance discount

If your child’s school is a significant distance from home, you could save money by keeping the car at home. Many auto insurance companies offer an “away at school” discount if a child rated on your policy is away at college. There are some distance restrictions; with my current insurance carrier the college has to be at least 120 miles away from home. My daughter qualified, but my son did not.

Garaging address

You should also have the vehicle rated at its new garaging address.

The Freeman Auto Report found that new car sales in the greater Austin area increased 10% in 2010 compared to 2009.  This is still far off pace from new car sales in 2007, when over 100,000 new cars were sold in Austin according to the article “Texas New Car Sales Increase in 2010? on USInsuranceonline.com.

General Manager of Jaguar Land Rover Austin said in an interview with the Austin American-Statesman that this is a good sign and that 2011 will be a good year for everyone.  The economy is slowly picking up and this is definitely affecting new car sales as well as car insurance quotes in Texas.

The Texas Department of Insurance says the market has recently added 9 new providers which could make prices more competitive for Texas auto insurance rates.

When a news reporter quips, “The accident is being blamed on the recent snow storm…” it always gets a chuckle out of me. If you are in an accident, and did the hitting, you are at fault. Road conditions certainly play a role in many accidents, but it is up to you as the driver to adapt to those conditions and safely operate your car. The snow may contribute to your accident, but it was caused by you over-driving the conditions and losing control of your vehicle.

Driving in winter poses many special challenges. If you live in the northern part of the country, it is dark when you leave for work and dark when you head home. Storms can down trees and power lines, making your normal route impassable and forcing detours.
