The first week of your stay as an international student in a foreign land is always exciting. You’re anxious, you’re excited, you’re scared and what not. You experience a mix of emotions. All your energies are focused on overcoming these emotions and settling in the new country.

Once you get past this stage is when home sickness starts to set in. This is when you start missing those tasty morning coffees and breakfasts that mom never fails to treat you with, every morning of the twenty years or more at home.

Here’s one quick tip to avoid this dreaded period. Plan first month abroad well ahead. Let there not be too much spare time at least during the first 3 to 4 weeks.

Are you good at keeping in touch with family back home while you’re studying abroad? A survey by UK insurance company Endsleigh found families now contact each other primarily by text – 60 percent of young people reported using texts to update their parents on their lives. Second most popular was email (36 percent).

If text seems a little too brief, social networking sites can fill the gap. However, 72 percent of people aged between 18 and 25 reported not being friends with their parents on facebook – a good way of keeping party photos and incriminating messages away from the prying eyes of mom and dad.

You need your privacy but parents do worry – ease their fears by phoning regularly or keeping them up-to-date by text and email.
